There aren’t too many classic American dive bars in London, even fewer good ones! This list is for those in search of a night out with an unpolished charm and (maybe) some affordable drinks. We’ve been to each of these many times over the years, so although these are just our opinions, you can definitely trust them!

From live music to delicious food, each of these hidden gems has their own appeal, make sure to visit them all.

📍 112 Upper Street, Islington, N1 1QN

Step into Slim Jim’s Liquor Store, and you’ll instantly feel transported to a retro American dive. The walls are plastered with classic rock ‘n’ roll memorabilia and neon signs, and the ceiling is decorated with bras left behind by adventurous patrons (yes, really!).

You can enjoy a wide selection of whiskeys and cocktails while listening to classic rock tunes. It’s perfect for anyone who is looking for an epic, rowdy night out.

Their Pickleback night and their large selection of whiskys.

📍 205a Lower Clapton Rd, Lower Clapton, E5 8EG

Blondies is a small dive bar with big energy. This spot is known for its gothic  aesthetic and live music. It regularly hosts performances by up-and-coming rock, doom, stoner and metal bands.

The drinks menu includes a variety of spirits and beers, Blondies even have their own brewery a little further east. Blondies is perfect for a gothic night out discovering new music and friendly faces.

Passyunk Avenue is a dive bar inspired by everything to do with Philadelphia. It’s a great spot for anyone craving classic American comfort food with a large dose of Philly culture.

The bar serves authentic Philly cheesesteaks, cold American beers, and classic BBQ snacks. It’s also a go-to for watching NFL or Baseball in the UK and the playlist usually consists of classic rock and blues tunes.

Big Red is a dive bar that is reminiscent of Sunset Strip in the 80’s. This bar has moved location a few times, it seems its unrelenting rock ‘n’ roll spirit cannot be killed.

The interior is red-themed, with leather booths and vintage decor. It’s a friendly place to enjoy live music with affordable drinks and food.

The food menu features burgers, nachos, and other American-style dishes. Big Red is a top pick for classic rock fans, with a hell raising playlist and live music some nights.

Aces and Eights is a dive bar in Tufnell Park that serves amazing pizza. The dimly lit bar has a jukebox, retro seating, and a basement space for live music and comedy nights.

Their New York-style pizza slices are a hit, and the drinks menu includes craft beers and classic cocktails. It’s a great spot for anyone who loves good food and a relaxed atmosphere.
